  • WIFS weekly news #29: Anaga Country Park

Now that you know pretty much everything about the scientific aspects of the conference, the next posts will present a few extra possible activities offered by the fantastic location of Tenerife. We start this series with the Anaga Country Park.

    (sources: http://www.tenerife.es , )

The Anaga Country Park is a mountainous massif situated in the far northeast of the island. It is an area of significant value, not only for its landscape but also in natural and cultural terms, given the biodiversity of the habitats it houses, the many endangered and protected species that live in its relict forests and the fascinating geomorphological forms that are found there. Moreover, the park is also home to a number of rural settlements whose agricultural activities have bestowed an extraordinary beauty and harmony upon the landscape.

Anaga has an interesting network of roads and paths leading to stunning panoramic views and spectacular natural spots either by car, bus or walking. You will also come across many picturesque farmhouses where you can stop to experience the local way of life.

  • WIFS weekly news #27: The program in one picture

    Posted on by publicity_chair

You have probably already noticed that the technical program is available here: composed of 4 tutorials, 3 keynotes speeches, 5 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. If however you didn’t take time to what it is going to be about, here is a picture that will sum-up pretty well the main topics of WIFS’12.

One image is worth a thousand words, and thousand words can be present in one image.

  • WIFS weekly news #26: WIFS gets a positive Gradiant

    Posted on by publicity_chair

We’re happy to announce that Gradiant will support WIFS’12.

Gradiant is the Galician Research and Development Center in Advanced Telecommunications, that was born to align university R&D capabilities with business demands. Gradiant’s main goal is the generation of ICT knowledge and its transfer to industry and society. Based in Vigo, Spain, Gradiant started operations in 2008 and has since steadily increased its staff reaching over 60 researchers as of Q3 2012. Gradiant’s ICT research and innovation activity focuses on Communications, Networks and Services, and Multimodal Information.

LIFTGATE (Lifting Up the Research Potential of the Galician Telecomms Center) is a project funded by the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme under the “Research Potential” activity. LIFTGATE aims at stimulating Gradiant’s full potential by unlocking and developing its existing research and innovation excellence in the following ICT topics: multimedia security, information processing and information systems design, and satellite communications. LIFTGATE’s goal is to strengthen the capacities of Gradiant’s researchers to successfully participate in research and innovation activities at European Research Area level. This will be achieved by a combination of measures:

    • Acquisition of laboratory equipment
    • Hiring of researchers with proven research experience
    • Implementing know-how exchange actions with industrial and academic entities that are EU leaders in ICT research.
    • Organizing and supporting seminars and conferences on cutting-edge knowledge on a number of ICT topics such as WIFS’12
    • Improving Gradiants’s competence in innovation and intellectual property management and innovation and other complementary skills

  • WIFS weekly news #25: Note the Keynotes

    Posted on by publicity_chair

Besides the 48 papers that will be presented, do not forget that you’ll have the opportunity to attend the 3 plenary sessions starting at 9:00 AM.   The topics of these talks will cover three very hot research areas:

    • Mauro Barni’s talk will be on the design of signal processing systems considering a potential adversary. What are the requirements for secure processing? How to deal with them?
    • George Danezis’s talk will be on anonymous communications. Are they possible? To what extent? What is the role of information hiding in this framework?
    • James L. Wayman’s talk will be on the use of audio forensics and speaker recognition in courts of law. Are they usable? What is their impact on the court decision?

After attending to these 3 keynotes, you should be able to speak anonymously to an adversary through a microphone using a secure covert channel…

More information on the keynotes here.

  • WIFS weekly news #24: back to the Lab … with 48 papers announced

    Posted on by publicity_chair

After a long reviewing process this summer involving 610 reviews, 48 papers have been selected for the conference to meet the 30% usual acceptance ratio of previous WIFS editions. Thanks to the reviewers’ effort, we were able to send the notifications one week ahead of schedule.

With this very low acceptance ratio, only the crème de la crème of the submitted papers have been selected and now the conference program is nearly ready, with 4 tutorials, 3 keynotes speakers, 5 oral sessions and 2 posters sessions. Add to this the visit of the observatory and the banquet in the banana plantation, and you obtain a dream conference in Information Forensics and Security.

The registration is now open here and note that the early bird registration deadline is October 22nd. There are also very interesting accommodation rates in absolutely great hotels using the form that can be downloaded here.

  • WIFS weekly news #23: Summer recess

    Posted on by publicity_chair

Summer holidays are probably one of the best periods to think about research: no email, no professor around you, no lectures to give, and the sand, the sun and the sea make the brainstorming session much easier.

All the WIFS’12 team wish you nice holidays, full of nice experiences and inspirations. We’ll be back the first week of September, and we’ll give you news about the results of the reviewing process.

    Stay tuned.

  • WIFS weekly news #22: European Project REWIND supports WIFS’12

    Posted on by general_chair

REWIND is a European Union project, funded by the Framework Programme 7, under the Future Emerging Technologies (FET) category. The partners are: Politecnico di Milano (Italy), CNIT (Italy) , Imperial College London (UK), University of Vigo (Spain), and Fraunhofer Institute (Germany).

Do you want to know what REWIND is about?

With the rapid proliferation of inexpensive acquisition and storage devices multimedia objects can be easily created, stored, transmitted, modified and tampered with by anyone. The REWIND (REVerse engineering of audio- VIsual coNtent Data) project is aimed at synergistically combining principles of signal processing, machine learning and information theory to answer relevant questions on the past history of such objects.

The REWIND proposal starts from the observation that each of the processing step applied to a multimedia object necessarily leaves a characteristic footprint, which can be potentially detected to trace back the past history of the analyzed content in a blind fashion, i.e. without having access to the original content. Note that, in many cases, these processing steps introduce undesired and irreversible distortions (“misprints”) in the original multimedia object, and considerable research efforts have been directed towards a more comprehensive understanding of how to prevent these artifacts.

REWIND intends to develop innovative tools and approaches to reverse this perspective completely: footprints are considered as an asset, i.e. a source of additional information about the multimedia object history, which can be leveraged to reconstruct the processing chain applied to audio-video digital objects. The principal application areas of the REWIND outputs will be on Multimedia Forensics, Multimedia Quality Assessment, Multimedia Restoration and Multimedia Fingerprinting.

  • WIFS weekly news #20: 160 papers submitted!

    Posted on by publicity_chair

The all-time record of submissions to WIFS has been broken, with 160 complete papers submitted. The organizing committee would like to thank all the authors who worked so much, even during the week-end, to submit their research work to the conference.

If you are one of these authors, you deserve a well-earned rest, and now wait until September 4th, for the notification of acceptance. Of course, we encourage you to stay tuned and learn about the latest news from WIFS by checking the websites, the RSS feeds or the social networks.

Number of submissions during the last week. If you know people that think that researchers do not work during weekends, show them this plot.
