  • WIFS weekly news #36: Car/Cab/Shuttle-Pool: Coordinate your travel at Tenerife

    Posted on by admin

If you want to save money or just decrease your carbon footprint, you can coordinate your travel to/from WIFS through the following table. If you are looking for a shared cab to the conference, or sharing a shuttle back to the airport, just fill in (updated below every 5 mn) to check in on the list and allow others to see your request.

Note also that shuttle companies leaving from Tenerife North airport such as this one offer reduced prices if the number of  customers is enough (>=4).

  • WIFS weekly news #34: Your to-do list and to-bring list

Because in one week you will be probably packing your suitcase, it’s now time to give you some advices on what you need to bring in Tenerife and what you can do before or after the conference.

We ask José-Manuel , the WIFS conference secretary, and here are his precious advices:

    - “Bringing a swimsuit is  mandatory, the last week people were without t-shirt on the streets :) ; Seawater is probably a little bit cold, because the Atlantic is in general colder than the Mediterranean sea or the Pacific Ocean, but temperature outside water  will be 25 degrees Celsius, so do not forget sun lotion.

    - “In the workshop hotel the swimming pool is heated. Nevertheless, a jacket is convenient at evenings”.

    - “ In the mountains or for the social event, winter clothes are needed, and perhaps pills preventing car sickness for those suffering with mountains roads”

    - “Yes, all kind of clothes must be taken: winter, summer, … but this is the land of microclimates, and we suffer the same every time in the year :)

    - “Ah, of course, do not forget a photo camera, the landscapes are really varied, ideal for amateur photographers.”

Now regarding things to do, you can of course scan the previous post of this blog to find the activity you would like to do (hiking the Teide or plain hiking, hunting the dragon tree, visiting the Anaga country park, visiting La Gomera island, rock climbing, discovering the Canarian fauna  or just laying on the sand), and here are José Manuel’s last tips:

    - “All kind of sea sports can be done: windsurf, surf, snorkeling, diving,…, so you may consider to put your snorkeling gear in your suitcase”

    - “The best form to visit the island is renting a car. You can do a complete round in one day excursion.”

    -  ”You can even visit the closest island: La Gomera, in another one day excursion. The ferry leaves from a 5 minutes port every day. You can see the buildings in La Gomera from our hotel.”

    - ” There are many boats to watch wales and dolphins. And in beaches there are many water activities. Bermuda shorts are mandatory :) .”

Thank you José-Manuel, and see you there, very soon!

  • WIFS weekly news #33: Ready for 3,718 m (12,198 ft)?

If you’re brave enough to hike the tallest mountain of Spain, don’t forget to book a permit to have access to the top. You can apply

Note also that, as already presented in the weekly news #7, you make most of the hike using the cable car, still you will have to hike the last 163m. You can find also on a list of the different trails starting from the top of the cable car (called “La Rambleta”).

  • WIFS weekly news #32: Watch out for the Dragon Tree

    From : http://www.tenerife.es:

Legends say that when dragons die they become dragon trees, and it is obvious why this living fossil is one of the symbols of the Canary Islands, and maybe even the greatest treasure of Canarian flora. When one looks at its peculiar shape, it is also not surprising that the tree was considered a divine tree by the early inhabitants of the islands. Until recently, Dracaena draco was considered to be native to Madeira, the Canary Islands and Cape Verde; however, it has now also been found in wild populations in Morocco.

The islands are home to a number of impressive dragon trees. The great explorer and naturalist Alexander von Humboldt was greatly impressed when in the Franchy Gardens he saw before him a giant 25-metre high dragon tree with a 23-metre circumference, although there has been disagreement regarding these measurements. This tree, unfortunately, disappeared following strong winds in 1867. Today, the largest and most famous dragon tree, which has a diameter of 20 metres at the base and is 17 metres high, stands majestically in Icod de Los Vinos (Tenerife), 100km from the workshop hotel. It weighs approximately 150 tonnes not including the roots. There has been much debate over the age of the tree, and some say it may be over 5000 years old; however, recent estimates suggest that the tree is no more than 800 to 1000 years old.

In 1985, the tree was fully cleaned up and a ventilator was placed inside the trunk to facilitate air circulation and prevent a build-up of fungus. In 1993, the Town Hall of Icod de los Vinos made a deviation in a road that passed just a few metres by the dragon tree, and now, fortunately, this iconic tree is no longer in obvious danger.

  • WIFS weekly news #31: The high season is approaching

Between the winter months of December and January, accommodation in Tenerife can easily become fully booked, which means that if you haven’t booked your hotel yet, you should do it asap.

Note that the conference organizing committee succeeded in having interesting offers (ranging from 50€ to 170€). The rates in the conference hotel, a five star resort, are particularly interesting (170€ instead of 210€, or 110€ for one occupant).

You can have access to the accommodation page and download the accommodation form directly from here. Hurry up, the deadline for the booking is also approaching (November 26).

  • WIFS weekly news #30: Early birds and Low-cost birds

Do not forget the deadline for the early bird registration is next Monday, after that the fees will increase in 200$.

Here is another tip if you want to save money: there are a lot of low-cost flight companies proposing cheap flights to Tenerife South or North airports (if you have the choice between the two options, note that the South airport is much closer to the conference venue).

You’ll find the full list of the companies that serve the South Airport on this wikipedia page and the North Airport on this page.

The Tenerife Airport is waiting for you!

  • WIFS weekly news #29: Anaga Country Park

Now that you know pretty much everything about the scientific aspects of the conference, the next posts will present a few extra possible activities offered by the fantastic location of Tenerife. We start this series with the Anaga Country Park.

    (sources: http://www.tenerife.es , )

The Anaga Country Park is a mountainous massif situated in the far northeast of the island. It is an area of significant value, not only for its landscape but also in natural and cultural terms, given the biodiversity of the habitats it houses, the many endangered and protected species that live in its relict forests and the fascinating geomorphological forms that are found there. Moreover, the park is also home to a number of rural settlements whose agricultural activities have bestowed an extraordinary beauty and harmony upon the landscape.

Anaga has an interesting network of roads and paths leading to stunning panoramic views and spectacular natural spots either by car, bus or walking. You will also come across many picturesque farmhouses where you can stop to experience the local way of life.

  • WIFS weekly news #27: The program in one picture

    Posted on by publicity_chair

You have probably already noticed that the technical program is available here: composed of 4 tutorials, 3 keynotes speeches, 5 oral sessions and 2 poster sessions. If however you didn’t take time to what it is going to be about, here is a picture that will sum-up pretty well the main topics of WIFS’12.

One image is worth a thousand words, and thousand words can be present in one image.
